Instantly Recognizable and Classic
Racoon fur is perhaps the most recognizable fur in America. It is also one of the most well-known. Racoon fur was used by many early settlers, especially to make hats. The most iconic of those racoon fur hats easily belonged to Davy Crockett. Featuring a distinctive tail with rings of light and dark fur, our Racoon Pelt is instantly recognizable and classic.
Racoon Fur: Unique and Plush
Racoon fur consists of long and tipped outer guard hairs that protect an under layer of dense and plush fur. Each Merlin’s Hide Out Racoon Pelt features fur of around 1.5” in length and unique coloring of natural earthy browns and blacks. The plush under layer of fur is also naturally insulating, providing great warmth. Our Racoon Pelts are selected for their prime winter fur to ensure the highest quality pelt, and are garment tanned to create an incredibly soft and flexible hide.
How to Use Your Racoon Pelt
Our Racoon Pelts are incredibly versatile. Each hide measures approximately 24” long from tip of head to end of tail, and each tail measures approximately 10”. Traditionally, racoon fur has been used to create beautiful collars and fur trim for coats, vests, and other apparel. Of course, it makes a mighty fine hat too! Our Racoon Pelts also make great decorative elements as throws for your cozy armchairs or sofas.
